I launched my metalsmithing career part time while I was working in corporate management and education. A long recurring theme in my artistic life is Scandinavian folklore and stories of magic, myths and legends - which weave their way into my jewelry. My Norwegian grandparents instilled a deep love of my roots, and my mother's parents taught me how to work with my hands, and gave me an abiding love of the outdoors, especially the American west. I am a passionate learner, maker and educator, so I combine my love of making art with teaching art - I conduct private and small group workshops in my studio to teach other artists how to hone their skills and techniques so they too can pursue their passions.
I show and sell my work in many venues, including regional and national art festivals, numerous Scandinavian festivals across the country, and in galleries in the Pacific Northwest.
I teach metalsmithing at the Multnomah Arts Center in Portland, and at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. Plus, if you are interested in private metals lessons, call or email me for studio appointment times. Lesson rates are by the hour or full day session. Here are some of the topics I teach:
Basic to advanced metal fabrication, including design, construction and soldering techinques, etching, roll printing, hydraulic press forming and bi-metals.
Stone setting - cabochon bezel setting, faceted stone setting (tube setting, prong/basket setting, flush setting, and alternative methods).
Enameling - applying glass to metal using various torch and kiln methods
Metal Clay - from beginner to advanced, including teacher certification of Level One Art Clay Silver, Crossover Certification for PMC, and Senior Level Art Clay Certification
Chainmaking - chain maille, soldered chain, Etruscan chains, and custom made clasps for chains
The ancient art of filigree and granulation - based strongly on my training in Norwegian filigree, constructing intricate patterns of delicate twisted wire designs soldered into open-work frames or solid metal backgrounds
Hollow form metal construction - from pendants/lockets, rings, bracelets and small treasure boxes
Finger rings - from classic bands to modern statement rings
